Amherst Mushroom Company Presented at Applewood Retirement Community
Amherst Mushroom Company recently had the privilege of presenting at Applewood at Amherst, a retirement community recognized for its commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and thoughtful living.
The presentation focused on three core themes: how we grow mushrooms, how we steward the land, and how shared meals strengthen community.
Growing Mushrooms with Intention
Residents learned about our cultivation process inside the Big Red Barn, from substrate preparation to harvest. We discussed the environmental efficiency of indoor mushroom production and the unique biological role fungi play in forest ecosystems.
Mushrooms are not only a nutritious local food source; they are also a powerful example of how agriculture and ecology intersect.
Conservation and Stewardship
We also shared the history of the land, once known as Amherst’s Poor Farm, and how it continues to evolve through conservation-minded farming practices. Our work includes protecting wetlands, maintaining pollinator habitat, and managing forested acreage with long-term ecological health in mind.
Land stewardship remains central to our mission. Growing food responsibly means protecting the natural systems that make that growth possible.
Lunch and Conversation
Following the presentation, we enjoyed a shared meal and meaningful conversation with residents and staff. The discussion extended beyond farming into stories of Amherst, memories of the land, and thoughtful questions about sustainability and local agriculture.
We are grateful to Applewood for the opportunity to connect with the community in this way. Events like this reinforce our belief that farming is not just about production — it is about relationships, education, and long-term stewardship.
Amherst Mushroom Company remains committed to growing food, conserving land, and strengthening community across the Valley.
